Safety Precautions needed when using an Electrical Iron

What safety precautions should be taken while handling an electric iron? The Safety Precautions Needed when Using an Electrical Iron, this question will be answered by simply reading the entire article below.

  • First thing first, read all instructions manual carefully before using. Far too many people do not read their instructions manual.
  • Use the electrical iron only for its intended use. To protect against the risk of electrical shock do not immerse the electrical iron into water or other liquids.
  • To protect against burns or injury to persons do not iron or steam fabrics while being worn on the body. Do not direct the steam toward the body when ironing or self-cleaning.
  • The electric iron should always be turned OFF before plugging into or unplugging from an electrical outlet. Never pull the cord to disconnect from the outlet; instead, grasp the plug and pull to disconnect.
  • Let the electrical iron cool completely before putting away.
  • Always disconnect the electrical iron from the electrical outlet when filling with or emptying water and when not in use.
  • Do not operate the iron with a damaged cord or if the iron has been damaged. To avoid the risk of electrical shock do not disassemble the iron and take it to a qualified technician for examination or repair. Incorrect reassembly can cause a risk of electric shock when the iron is iron is in use.
  • Do not operate the electrical iron if it has been dropped, if there are visible signs of damage, or if it is leaking.
  • Close supervision is necessary for any appliance being used by or near children. Do not leave the electrical iron unattended while connected or on an ironing board.
  • Burns can occur from touching hot metal parts, hot water, or steam. Use caution when you turn a steam iron upside down or use the surge of steam – there may be hot water in the water tank. Avoid rapid movement of iron to minimize hot water spillage.
  • To avoid a circuit overload, do not operate another high-wattage appliance on the same circuit.
  • If an extension cord is absolutely necessary, a minimum cord rating of 15-ampere should be used. Cords rated for less amperage can result in a risk of fire or electrical shock due to overheating. Care should be taken to arrange the cord so that it cannot be pulled or tripped over.
  • It is not recommended to be used outdoors.
  • This appliance is not intended for use by persons including children with reduced physical, sensory or mental capabilities, or lack of experience and knowledge, unless they have been given supervision or instruction concerning the use of the appliance by a person responsible for their safety. Children should be supervised to ensure that they do not play with the appliance.

The First Use

·         During the first use of the iron, it may appear to smoke. This will stop and does not indicate the product is defective or hazardous to you.

·         Many irons spit or sputter during the first use of tap water. This happens as the steam chamber becomes conditioned. This will stop after a few uses.

·         Steam vents should be cleared before first use. Prepare iron for steam ironing; then iron over an old cloth for a few minutes while letting the iron steam.

After each Use

1.   Set the Temperature gauge or selector Dial to the OFF position and unplug.

2.   If any water remains in the water tank empty it. It is not a good practice to store the iron in water after use.

3.   Wait for the unit the iron has cooled before storing it, and always set it on the Heel Rest (Vertical) to protect the soleplate from scratches, corrosion, or stains.

4. Wrap the cord neatly by winding the power cord around the Heel Rest before storing.

How to fill with Water

1.   Move the Steam/Dry Selector to the Dry position to avoid water leakage. Open the water fill opening (if there is any). Tilt the iron slightly and fill the iron with water up to the desired marking “MAX” line. Use a cup for filling not recommended to place it over the sink or pipe.

2.   Do not overfill. Check for the correct water fill level with the iron in a vertical position.

Emptying the water tank

·         Unplug the electrical iron and let it cool.

·         To release the water hold the iron over a sink with the tip pointing down and to one side. Water will empty out of the water-fill opening.

·         Without properly emptying the water tank of the iron, if the steam/dry selector is not in the Dry position after use, the remaining water will move into the soleplate and can result in burns at the next use of the iron.

·         Do not use the Steam or Jet Steam, while the AC cord is unplugged, water will remain inside the soleplate which will cause staining. Please do not use steam or jet steam while the temperature selector dial is set OFF.

Cleaning

·         Move the temperature selector to the OFF position, unplug the iron, and allow the iron to cool completely.

·         Wipe the soleplate and outer surfaces with a soft cloth or sponge dampened in water. Never use abrasives, heavy-duty cleaners, vinegar, or scouring pads that may scratch or discolor the iron.

·         Turn or Lock the steam button to the OFF or DOWN position. This helps keep the water valve clean and prevents water from entering the steam chamber, which could cause spitting during the next use.

·         When storing the electrical iron always store it on its heel rest. When placing the iron on its Heel Rest, ensure that the surface on which the Heel Rest is placed is stable. Storing the iron on its soleplate can cause leaks or damage.

·         Never use steam iron cleaning products in the iron, as they may damage the working parts of the iron.

·         Do not use water additives or substitute water as linen or scented water in the steam iron. They can stain fabrics.

Using as a DRY Iron

1.   It is recommended that you empty the water before dry ironing.

2.   Move the Steam/Dry selector to the Dry position. Position the iron vertically; set the temperature Selector Dial to the OFF position.

3.   Set the Temperature Selector Dial or Gauge to the desired position. The Dry position is normally from the 1 to 3 mark.

4.   Preheat the iron; this usually takes 1-2 minutes.
